On September 15, 1934, Bruno Hauptman purchased five gallons of gas at the Warner-Quinlan Company, 127th Street and Lexington Avenue, Manhattan. Walter Lyle, the manager of the gas station, wrote Hauptmann's license plate number on the ten dollar gold certificate he received in payment; 4U13-41.
